An American's Tribute To Irish Film & Literature

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, EAMONN OWENS!
January 18, 2003

Born on January 18, 1983 in Killeshandra, Ireland.

In 1996, with no previous acting experience (in fact, he'd rarely been to the cinema), Eamonn Owens impressed the hell out of Neil Jordan and got the role of Francie Brady in The Butcher Boy (based on the novel by Patrick McCabe).

He had auditioned with about 2000 other boys, including his hometown friend Alan Boyle (who played Joe Purcell in the film). The closest things to acting experience he had were playing the tin whistle in Killeshandra's marching band and modeling clothes for a local shop. Contrary to popular belief, he is not a natural redhead. (They dyed it in The Butcher Boy to make him appear more mischevious!)

Other films released in the U.S.:

  • The General / John Boorman, 1998 / played young Martin Cahill
  • Angela's Ashes / Alan Parker, 1999 / played Quasimodo (Eamonn's younger brother, Ciaran Owens, played middle Frank; Ciaran had a small part in The Butcher Boy as one of the two boys who takes over Francie and Joe's fountain)

  • And then there's The Terms (Johnny O'Reilly, 2001)...
I found this film's director online and he sent me a copy of this amazing short film (based on the short story by Mike McCormack). I wrote this review. The image of Eamonn above is from this film.

    Eamonn's acting habits:

  • Going to juvenile correctional facilities/prison/"the garage"
  • Getting molested by priests/runners of such facilities
  • Having heartless/alcoholic fathers
  • Having mothers die on him
  • Being dirt poor
  • Acting in films based on stories by crazy Irish writers
  • Not doing enough stuff that's released in the U.S.!!!
